What is PPC?

PPC, also sometimes referred to as Cost Per Click advertising, is an internet advertising model that is used to direct traffic to your website from Google, with you paying Google each time the ad is clicked. If done well PPC marketing can utilise search engine advertising to generate a large number of clicks to your website. Not only is this a highly effective method of marketing your brand, but it’s also nicely measurable, allowing you to see how effective your campaigns have been.

If your campaigns are carried out efficiently the cost you pay for each click will be trivial as it should lead to you making money through driving new leads.

How does it work?

When you search for something on Google, you will be presented with organic results, generated based on Google’s algorithms. You’ll also be presented with paid for adverts, usually on the right hand side or at the top of the page. It’s these paid for adverts that have been created and optimised using PPC. So, when you want to appear in these positions for specific and relevant terms, you need to set up a Google Adwords account, select the key phrases you wish to target and begin bidding for the slots.

Whether or not you do appear high up when your specific key terms are searched for is based on your Ad Rank. This is a metric that is calculated based on two contributing factors:

  • Your bid – This is how much you’re willing to spend per click and can be set by you.
  • Your quality score – This is a value that is assigned to your website taking into account your click through rate, how relevant you are to the search term you’re bidding for and the quality of the landing page, among other things.
