Why you should avoid cheap web design

Some people use frugality as a reason to spend less. People often aim for the cheapest option, whatever they’re shopping for, as they deem that to be the best choice. However, here at Spidersnet we feel that frugality is more about spending money wisely. Whilst some deals may be cheap they could end up costing you more money in the long run. This means that the wiser and more informed choice may be to opt for a product or item that costs you more, but offers you more at the same time.

This is particularly true when talking about website design. There are plenty of cheap and cheerful web design companies out there offering too-good-to-be-true deals on websites. And unfortunately many businesses up and down the UK get drawn in by what they perceive to be a bargain. We all know the phrase: ‘you get what you pay for’, and this couldn’t be more true when it comes to website design.

It’s worth remembering at this point that motors dealers’ websites are vital to their business. A top quality website, that perfectly represents your brand online is essential. This is because for many potential customers it may end up being the first time they interact with your business. So why wouldn’t you want to spend what’s needed to ensure that your site does everything that it is required to do?

You pay for a cheap site, you get a cheap site

More often than not, if you pay for a cheap site you will get a cheap site, and often cheap service to boot. Take a step away and think to yourself ‘how can this company afford to build, maintain and host my website for such a low cost?’ Well, here are a number of reasons that we’ve come across when browsing the web that might just answer that question for you.

Poor product

Let’s start at the beginning, one of the main reasons that some companies are able to offer such low prices, is because the sites that they offer are low quality. It is easy to churn out a weak website quickly, and therefore these companies can do so at a fraction of the cost.

Some dealers may decide that they want a simple and basic website, meaning they’re willing to sacrifice on some elements. However, there is still a level of quality required on a simple themed website that many cheap web design companies aren’t offering.

For example, whilst a cheap website may look great on the outside, it may be poorly optimised for Google, meaning you could be missing out on a huge number of potential customers. We’ve been preaching about the importance of Search Engine Optimisation for years, and so many web design companies fail to ensure that the sites they build are as optimised as can be. Cheap companies will often use poor, or in some cases no, meta tags and they will often have thin or duplicated content.

In fact, why not read our guide featuring a large list of common mistakes that we discover on car dealer websites.

Is it mobile friendly?

So, we’ve already discussed SEO, as we tend to do here at Spidersnet, and we’re now moving onto another of our favourite topics -mobile optimisation. Today, in this world of mobile browsing and current consumer trends, it is imperative that all car dealer websites function perfectly on mobile devices.

In fact, Google carried out some research that stated that 35% of car buyers used their mobile devices when searching for information on vehicles for sale. That’s over a third of your potential customers browsing on a mobile.

Lots of cheap websites aren’t responsive and don’t function well at all on a mobile device. Now, this means that anyone browsing on a mobile will have a terrible experience using the site and may come away thinking less of your brand. If your site doesn’t do everything it can to help people find out what you have to offer, then it isn’t worth having.

And, whilst we’re here, let’s bring up another huge issue with having a mobile unfriendly site. Google has now taken it upon itself to actually punish these websites by hindering their ability to appear in mobile search results pages. That means that you may also be missing out on potential customers who are missing your brand entirely when browsing on a mobile.

Low levels of customer service

OK so let’s say a cheap web design company is offering a decent product, it’s likely that they’ll often be cutting corners in other areas. One such area may well be customer service. These companies will often have a huge number of clients and a very small customer care team. This means that if there is an issue with your website, or you need something changed, you may be waiting a long time for these issues to be fixed.

You’ll often end up having to make a number of calls, or having to send a number of emails before you even get to speak to someone who is able to help. Again, this isn’t always the case, but we’ve had a number of customers come to us with tales of frustration and anger at how they’ve been neglected in the past. Sometimes, the failure of their previous web design company to solve and sort out issues has led to the dealerships losing money through missed sales opportunities.

“It’s refreshing to deal with a company where nothing is too much trouble. Our website was built exactly as we wanted it and any changes we request are dealt with promptly and efficiently. We saw an increase in traffic from day one and our customers tell us they love it. We couldn’t be more pleased with the service we’ve received.”

Stuck with an out of date site

Here at Spidersnet we are constantly updating our latest 3.1 Infinity platform. This means that as consumer trends change, or as Google releases new algorithms, we are ensuring that our customers’ websites are being updated to keep up with these new requirements.

Some of the cheapest web design companies fail to improve their platforms as a way of keeping costs down. This means that you may have a nice shiny website today, but in a few year’s time it may start to look antiquated, leaving you on the hunt for another new site.

To conclude

I guess the closing statement of this piece would be as follows: Always ensure that you’re spending wisely when it comes to website design. There is usually a very clear reason why the cheapest web design companies can afford to offer such an enticing price. Is it not better to spend that bit extra and purchase a good quality car, than to go out in search of the cheapest banger available only to be on the hunt for another when it inevitably falls to pieces?

Your dealership’s website should be something you’re proud of. It is how your business is represented online so should look professional, work well and help your business to drive as many sales as possible. It should be in tune with your physical dealership and reinforce your branding. It should allow you to show off your stock to as many potential customers as possible, offering users the chance to get in touch if they have any questions.

But I will say this: If you have gone for a cheap deal. If you have ended up with a website that you’re not happy with, it’s not too late. The sooner you find yourselves a new, professional web design company who can produce a high end product and take care of your dealership’s needs along the way, the better. Frugality is spending money wisely, which sometimes means avoiding the cheapest deal available.
